Asian Pacific American Union Leadership School

Program Overview

The UCLA Downtown Labor Center and the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) hosted the Asian Pacific American Union Leadership School (APAULS) from October 5-7, 2007.  Over 40 Asian Pacific American (APA) and APA allies convened in Los Angeles to continue the fight for worker and immigrant rights.

Leadership Development & Training

Trained by some of the most respected APA union leaders in the country, participants were exposed to sessions on effective organizing, political mobilization, and leadership development. Additionally, organizers convened panel discussions addressing the importance of community and labor coalitions and the critical role that union members will play in organizing, contract campaigns, and the 2008 election.  Finally, organizers facilitated strategic planning sessions to ensure that partcipants were able to incorporate these tools into their respective organizations.

Political Empowerment

The APAULS also proved an excellent opportunity for the LA APALA chapter to organize their annual fundraiser.  The KIWA Drumming Troupe and Wong's Kung Fu and Chintown Lion Dance Troupe treated supporters to cultural performances, followed by several LA labor leaders.

"APALA has always served as the voice for working people in LA and we applaud you for your continued committment to social and economic justice, " stated Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO.

Additional recognized guests included Judy Chu, Vice Chair of the California Board of Equalization, Mike Eng, Assembly Member for California's 49th District, Warren Furutani, a LA Community College District Board of Trustees members, and Armin Reyes, President of the ABC Unified School Board.
